A proposal for a sponsorship for funding the Sri Lankan Mathematical Olympiad and the Sri Lankan team to the International Mathematical Olympiad

Introduction

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship mathematics competition for high school students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania with 7 countries participating. Contestants have to be less than 20 years of age and not formally enrolled at a university or any other equivalent post-secondary institution. Participation in the IMO is by invitation only. Each invited country is entitled to send a team consisting of up to six contestants, a Leader and a Deputy Leader. The country that hosts the IMO provides accommodation, meals, and land based transport for the team.

Sri Lanka has participated in the IMO since 1995 with partial funding from the Government. As Government funding has not always been certain, in some years there was no funding at all, a group of academics from the University of Colomboformed the Sri Lanka Olympiad Mathematics Foundation in 2004 with the hope of raising funds through private sector sponsorships.

From the year 2004, the Sri Lanka Olympiad Mathematics Foundation has held the Sri Lankan Mathematical Olympiad. The Sri Lankan Mathematical Olympiad is a mathematics competition designed to find the best mathematical talent in the country. This consists of two competitions:

(i)

Sri Lankan Mathematics Competition

This is a test consisting of 30 challenging multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 90 minutes. This competition is designed for students in Grades 9 – 13 and is open to any student from a local or international school. Unlike formal examinations in mathematics, the problems in this competition are set in situations to which students can relate, indicating the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives. The competition is designed to be enjoyable and of sufficient interest to stimulate discussion at a later time, with friends, parents or in the class. High Distinction and Distinction Certificates will be awarded to students who perform well in this competition.

(ii)

Sri Lankan Mathematics Challenge Competition

This is a test consisting of 5 essay type problems with a time of three hours. This is open to the first 25 students in the Sri Lankan Mathematics Competition and is designed to test them to the limit. All the participants will be awarded Participation Certificates and the first three will be awarded medals as winners of the Sri Lankan Mathematical Olympiad; Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively to the first, second and third.
