International Mathematical Olympiad

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. The problems in the IMO comes from topics in Number Theory, Algebra, Combinatorics and Geometry. Though the problems are based on high school material, solving them requires exceptional mathematical ability and thinking. Participation in the IMO is by invitation only. Each invited country is entitled to send a team consisting of up to six contestants, a Leader and a Deputy Leader. The contestants individually solve same six problems on two consecutive days. In each day they are given three problems to solve within a time limit of four and half hours.

Selection Process of the Sri Lankan Team to the International Mathematical Olympiad

  • A team at most of six students will be selected to compete in the annual International Mathematical Olympiad through a series of selection tests known as IMO Team Selection Tests (IMO TST)
  • Participation in IMO team selection tests is by invitation only. The first 10-15 students of Sri Lankan Mathematics Challenge Competition (SLMCC) who has demonstrated strong mathematical abilities through their SLMCC performance will be invited to participate in IMO TSTs. Number of participants in IMO TSTs can vary from year to year based on the way students have performed in SLMCC.
  • The age and student status criteria given in the IMO annual regulations to determine the eligibility to participate is the following. Contestants must have been born less than twenty years before 1st of July in the year of participation at the IMO. Contestants must have been normally enrolled in fulltime primary or secondary education on or after 1st of December in the year prior to the IMO.
  • In order to get selected in to the Sri Lankan IMO team the student must be a citizen of Sri Lanka with at least two years of secondary school education in Sri Lanka.
  • In order to get selected in to the Sri Lankan IMO team the student must be a citizen of Sri Lanka with at least two years of secondary school education in Sri Lanka.
  • In case of a student who has represented Sri Lanka at the IMO three or more times and whose age is less than 18 in the year the IMO is held, then an achievement of Bronze or higher in a previous participation at the IMO is required to participate at the IMO.
  • In case of a student who has represented Sri Lanka at the IMO three or more times and becomes 18 or more in the year the IMO is held, then an achievement of Silver or Gold in a previous participation at the IMO is required to participate at the IMO.
  • Sri Lanka Olympiad Mathematics Foundation reserves the right to withdraw any student who does not show enough commitment towards IMO or who does not show a satisfactory progress in achieving the expected problem solving skill level at IMO. The criteria to determine the commitment and progress will be announced with the invitation to the IMO TSTs.

    • Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad

    The Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) is a regional mathematics competition for countries in Asia and Pacific region. It started in 1989 and in 2017 the number of participating countries was 39. The APMO contest consists of one four-hour paper consisting of five questions of varying difficulty and is conducted by a representative in each participating country. The problems are prepared by a senior coordinating country with the help of an assistant coordinating country and a moderating country. Sri Lanka Olympiad Mathematics Foundation is the representative of APMO in Sri Lanka. In each year the APMO is held in the afternoon of the second Monday of March for participating countries in the North and South Americas, and in the morning of the second Tuesday of March for participating countries on the Western Pacific and in Asia.

    Please see the IMC 2016 Brochure. A team for IMC category III is selected by inviting top 30 performers at SLMC who satisfy the age criteria stipulated by the competition organizers for a selection test.
